Martha Titterington (my grandmother) was born in Rainhill, Lancashire on 27 Jan 1913. She had a twin brother, George. Their parents were William Titterington, born 15 Jan 1881 (source: birth certificate), and Martha Stanley, born 9 Apr 1879 (source: birth certificate). William and Martha married in 1912 in Eccleston. This was Martha’s second marriage. Her first husband, Henry Platt, died in 1910, leaving her a widow with six young children to raise. After the twins William and Martha had another child, Violet, born in 1915. William was killed in action in Estaires, France, on 14 Aug 1917. Martha was on her own again.
William’s parents were James Bartholomew Titterington and Ann Swift. James was born on 18 Dec 1839 in Newton, Lancashire (source: birth certificate). Ann was born on 4 Oct 1846 in Rose Grove, Ardwick, Longsight, Lancashire (source: birth certificate). They married on 6 Feb 1870 at St. Catherine’s Parish Church, Manchester. They had five children: John (1872), Jane (1879), William (1881), Arthur (1885), George (1888).
James Bartholomew Titterington’s parents were James Titterington (born 1816 in Newton, Lancashire) and Jane Backhouse (born 1819 in Newton, Lancashire). James and Jane had eight children, of which James Bartholomew was the first.
Ann Swift’s parents were James Swift (born 1821 in Warrington, Lancashire) and Ellen Molineux (born 1825 in St. Helens, Lancashire). James and Ellen had seven children. Ann was the eldest.
